From fighting terrorism to helping people during this pandemic, J&K Police emerged as the pre-eminent police force in the country.J&K Police was established in 1873. The total strength of J&K Police in the year 1889 was just 1040, which further rose to 1570 in 1903 and at present it has gone more than 83000.
Around 1700 men of J&K Police have been killed by terrorists since 1989. From low-rank cops to DIG level officers, many have been killed in this turmoil. DySP Ayub Pandit was lynched by a mob in Jamia Masjid Srinagar while he was on night duty in the month of Ramzan, on June 22, 2017.In the same month and same year, a young SHO Feroz Dar was killed along with his five associates in an ambush laid by terrorists of proscribed terror outfit Lashkar e Toiba in Achabal area of South Kashmir’s Anantnag district .Sub-inspector Imtiyaz Ahmed Mir was shot dead on October 18,2018 by terrorists when he was heading to home in his car. SPO Wajahat Ahmed was killed by terrorists in Sopore this year when he was performing his duties. On 21st May,2020. Anoop Singh was killed by terrorists in Pulwama district of South Kashmir.Being locals, the cops of J&K Police are easy targets of terrorists. Local policemen are the unsung heroes. It is the capability of J&K Police that a large number of terrorists including top commanders have been eliminated.
The Jammu and Kashmir Police force has remained one of the best police force in the country which is not dealing only with routine prevention and detection of crime and maintaining of law and order but also fighting the war against terrorism. Challenges posed by the terrorists backed by Pakistan and the challenges posed by the local separatist groups are faced and contained by the Jammu and Kashmir Police very effectively.
The Jammu and Kashmir police force is having different specialised wings which includes CID security wing,  crime branch, traffic police and likewise. A new wing has also been established few months ago which is known as cyber police and with the creation of this wing,  two full fledged police stations were established one in Jammu division and the other in Kashmir division. The cyber police in Kashmir is being headed by an officer of the rank of Superintendent of police. Primarily the cyber police is Mandated to investigate the cases which are related to cyber world, internet and computer system. Since its inception, the Cyber Police Kashmir started various awareness programmes in which general public was educated and made aware about the miss use of cyber world in general and social media in particular. As per the sources the cyber police station Kashmir has remained flooded with complaints of Online harassment, bank frauds, OTP frauds , online bullying, creation of fake accounts and impersonation and dissemination of separatists ideologies, uploading of unlawful content besides glorification of terrorism and terrorist.Cyber Police Kashmir under the command of SP Tahir Ashraf is trying hard to contain the filth on the cyber world and making this platform a safe and clean one. Various Legal action as per the law of the land have also been initiated by the cyber police Kashmir.
